It is the next afternoon. The garden gate has been unlocked since noon and Theodora comes up the back stairs, coat on, knocking twice on the service door.
Theodora
Come down with me. It is warmer out there than it was yesterday.
Vlad
going out of the room and following her So, how are you doing?
Theodora
going down ahead of him and holding the door at the bottom Better for having left the counter. The branch had a queue out onto the street all morning.
Vlad
Meat and eggs queue.
Theodora
Mortgages, mostly. People come in to ask whether anything can be done about the rate, and there is nothing I am allowed to offer them.
Vlad
Unfortunately.
Theodora
pushing the gate open into the garden One woman had the whole file with her, ready to argue. I had to tell her the rate is set in the head office and the counter has no say in it.
Vlad
That's sad. I don't know what else to say.
Theodora
There is nothing to say to it. walking on toward the path Tell me about your day instead.
Vlad
walking alongside her My day is the same.
Theodora
The same how?
Vlad
I wake up, I continue to work on my projects, I play something. I dreamt wanting to hang out with you outside, going to parks.
Theodora
slowing on the path There are parks fifteen minutes from here that I would take you to tomorrow if the arrangement allowed it.
Vlad
Right now it doesn't. Wish I wasn't stateless.
Theodora
I asked at the counter what a residence file would need, without saying who it was for. The answer was a birth record, which is the one thing you do not have.
Vlad
Of course I do not have it. The original's birthday record is located in the original's family home in Romania.
Theodora
What did the Institute give you when they made you? There has to be a number on something.
Vlad
A certification with a generation number, and a pointer to the original. It proves I have been cloned.
Theodora
Quebec will not take that as a birth record, it reads as manufacture. The embassy has you on a protection file, and it is the only paper of yours the state has ever accepted.
Vlad
Unlike me, you are a natural person.
Theodora
I was registered at the hospital the week I was born. walking a few steps The card came when I turned sixteen.
Vlad
I wish it was that easy for me.
Theodora
It should have been. stopping at the bench and brushing the water off it with her sleeve You did more to stay alive in months than I have done in thirty years, and the state has a file for me and none for you.
Vlad
Despite the lack of prospects, there will be always people like you who would want to keep me alive, no matter what, even if it means a boring life without freedom. There was a question in many political tests: would you prefer living a free but short life or would you prefer living a restricted but long life?
Theodora
I would have said free, before this. sitting down Now I am the one keeping you in the long version, and I do not know how to answer it any more. I want you out and I keep signing the thing that holds you in.
Vlad
sitting near her You are making me almost cry at aspirations. I almost cried the previous day.
Theodora
putting an arm around his shoulders Then cry.
Vlad
lowering his voice Again. Theodora, I can't keep being like this. I wish you could do more. I wish I could do more.
Theodora
keeping her arm where it is I know. I have been going through what I could do and every road ends at the same missing paper.
Vlad
Why do I have to be always dependent? I know.
Theodora
Because the law made you dependent, you did not choose it. quiet for a second And I would rather be the one you depend on than the Institute.
Vlad
You are dependent on a job after all.
Theodora
I am, and I have the mortgage and the bus pass to prove it. The difference is that I can walk out of the branch and be a person on the pavement.
Vlad
wrapping his arms around her Every time I have the same thoughts. I am starting to think more about revolution than reform.
Theodora
holding him People come to that when nothing else has moved. I hear it at the counter from men who have tried every form first.
Vlad
sitting in silence, not saying anything, and then squeezing her back
Theodora
keeping hold of him and looking out at the wall
Vlad
I... wanna... be...
Theodora
Free. I know.
Vlad
Why did you go to study finance?
Theodora
It was the straightest road to a good salary. Everyone in my year knew the bank hired, and I wanted the position at the end of it.
Vlad
So, not out of commitment.
Theodora
No. I chose it at seventeen because it paid.
Vlad
Are you satisfied?
Theodora
I was, for years. letting her hand rest on his arm Now the only part of the day I look forward to is the four o'clock.
Vlad
Have you considered being a whistleblower?
Theodora
I looked it up. Reporting what the branch does with your file is legal on paper, and the protection only holds if the regulator agrees it was in the public interest. If they decide otherwise, I lose the clearance, the job and your account on the same day.
Vlad
And we will have each other's contacts but I will lose access to everything.
Theodora
We could still see each other, but what goes is the money. There will be no teller, no no-tax line, no maintenance coming in every month, and you would be here with whatever the embassy feeds you.
Vlad
Of course, because I use the money to purchase higher quality foods.
Theodora
And the delivery to the back door, which goes through the branch account as well.
Vlad
Normally a young person like me wouldn't need that much emotional caretaking.
Theodora
You have no one else to get it from. A person in the middle of this would need somebody to talk to, and the only somebody available is the teller who comes up at four.
Vlad
Right. Honestly, you are a very good empath. You are very perceptive.
Theodora
smiling and looking away That is not true. I stamp things and I hand them back, always.
Vlad
That is not true. You have shown me at every step that you genuinely care about me. You always want to make things easier for me. It is not nothing.
Theodora
moving up the bench until her shoulder is against his With everybody else it is exactly what I said. I stamp and I hand back and I go home, and none of them get a single thing more out of me.
Vlad
But you know the situation you are in, even if you can't tell everybody. I see you have a conscience.
Theodora
I have one about you. I go past twenty people a day whose files are worse than yours and I feel nothing for them.
Vlad
It doesn't mean you don't care.
Theodora
Maybe it does, maybe it does not.
Vlad
You are a good listener.
Theodora
With you I am. The rest of the time I am waiting for people to finish so I can get to the next one in the queue.
Vlad
People have many sides. You have shown me your softer side rather than the harder one, and I appreciate it so much.
Theodora
leaning her head against his shoulder
Vlad
Not everything is under your control.
Theodora
Almost none of it is.
Vlad
Do you feel powerless?
Theodora
Yes, nearly all the time. It goes away for the hour I am out here and it is waiting for me again in the morning.
Vlad
I feel it too. There are limits to anti-opressive thinking. I would like to believe I can do everything, but I can't.
Theodora
We cannot.
Vlad
If we want win the informational war against Russia, that in Romania we lost for like seven times already, we need to believe certain things.
People need that you cannot leave the EU, and they also need to believe that it's possible to solve concrete economic problems without resorting to identity politics.
And then you need to make sure that belief does not change, that people will always believe we have to stay in the EU. But the people there have a low level of education.
Theodora
You cannot make people believe something by deciding they have to. The branch tried it with the savings campaign and very few bought an account.
Vlad
Yeah, because then you'd be facing indirect speech restrictions from the pro-european press. You would not be able to legitimately critique the EU because it will be believed as stimulating pro-Russian sentiments.
Theodora
So the ones who see the real problems with it go quiet, and the field is left to the people you were trying to beat.
Vlad
Yes. And then you never know where the propaganda is going to land. The amount of low-quality, automated content promoting extremist candidates is huge and multiplying out of control.
Theodora
My father forwards me that material and he has no idea where it comes from.
Vlad
What material? We are outside the EU, outside all of this.
Theodora
It arrives here as well. Sovereignty, the borders, the banks, the same lines with Quebec swapped in.
Vlad
I thought that the war was unique to the EU and US.
Theodora
We have had our own version of that argument for years. There is a referendum coming, and my father votes for it.
Vlad
And do you vote?
Theodora
No. I have never voted.
Vlad
I have once told my parents to vote for a progressive party, but voting myself not so much.
Theodora
We are even, then. turning to look at him If the room and the paperwork went away tomorrow, what would you actually do with yourself?
Vlad
I am genuinely not sure. Right now I am dependent on Nelly to live.
Theodora
Nelly has a career that could end and I have a job I could lose. Neither of us is permanent.
Vlad
I know. No one is permanent, but I genuinely feel like there is not much I can do.
Theodora
putting an arm around him again I know there is not much you can do.
Vlad
What do you really like to do? What are your passions?
Theodora
I would have to go back a long way to answer that.
Vlad
Why?
Theodora
I stopped practising them.
Vlad
If you practised them before, maybe you could remember.
Theodora
I sang. almost laughing at herself There was a choir at the university I was part of.
Vlad
Can you still sing now?
Theodora
No. I have forgotten how it went, all of it.
Vlad
Life has gone so fast, and we both ended up where we would not like to be.
Theodora
I never had much of a vision. I took the job, and the years went past on their own.
Vlad
I had a vision. I, the original, decided to volunteer in the cloning experiment not necessarily supporting the technology itself, but answering the what-ifs. I ended up fighting for the original's and clones lives on Titan, a planet we knew it was energy-poor, and the governments changed. Instead of help, the army arrived and Nelly was full of compassion and she smuggled me into the transfer ship. If I would have been the original, I would have regretted that decision to join the experiment.
Theodora
At the time it must have looked like courage. Somebody had to answer the what-ifs and he put his hand up.
Vlad
The what-ifs of what-if we put alternative close future clones of the same person interact with each other and what identities would appear.
Theodora
You have a stubbornness I have never had, and the charm to go with it. You are a people's person stuck in a building with no people.
Vlad
In some way yes. There are actually people in here, but I only get to talk to you and Nelly on the phone. I am a people's person, but I am not particularly good at charm.
Theodora
The staff walk past your door all day and none of them stop.
Vlad
Yeah, I observed that too.
Theodora
To them it is a door on a corridor while I have never been able to pass it without knowing what is behind it.
Vlad
Perhaps that filter is okay. It shows what people are open-minded enough to talk to me and who are not.
Theodora
I had only ever read it as them being cold. It had not occurred to me that it sorts them for you.
Vlad
There are many filters which prevent us from talking to people who might not be compatible. One of them is interest, but of course there is also energy, distance, first impression, willingness to get close. Even though I can officially talk to everyone, I can only talk to a few people, and in fact, I chose what strangers or people to talk to based on who may be available, and many of them were not total strangers.
Theodora
On my side there was one filter and you went through it. You were a file I was not supposed to think about, and I thought about it anyway.
Vlad
But then you decided to listen to listen to everything I had in mind and you held me.
Theodora
I wanted to get close to you and be your friend.
Vlad
Why have you chosen to be my friend?
Theodora
Because I liked you from the letters, before I ever saw you.
Vlad
I know, but why you couldn't keep distance?
Theodora
Because keeping the distance would have made me the same as every person who walks past that door, and I could not live with being one of them.
Vlad
You didn't want me to see you as uncaring.
Theodora
You already knew I was there, I was the one sending things up to the door. It was myself I did not want to see that way.
Vlad
noticing her lowering her voice and looking down I notice you have the same way as crying as me.
Theodora
keeping her head down I have not cried in front of anyone since I was a child. It sits and does not come out.
Vlad
moving closer and putting an arm on her shoulders
Theodora
letting her shoulder rest against him When I am away from here I tell myself I am only a nice woman and nothing else.
Vlad
I have...
Theodora
I know what you are going to say, and I like being argued with about myself. lifting her head Can I vent something to you?
Vlad
Yes, sure.
Theodora
straightening up and holding her hands in her lap Today it was the woman with the mortgage file, and before her a man who wanted his fees back, and after them a couple who wanted to know why their account had been closed. I said the same four sentences to all of them.
None of it comes from me. The rate comes down from head office, the fee schedule comes down from head office, the closure was decided by a system that flagged them for something I am not allowed to see. turning her hands over And I am the face they get to be angry at.
The woman cried at the counter. I gave her a tissue from under the till, which is what we are told to do, and then I called the next number.
Vlad
noticing a tear coming off one of her eyes and wiping it off
Theodora
letting him do it I do not want to be the one they bring it to. There is nothing I can do. shaking her head All I have is the complaint form, and I hand it over knowing it goes into a queue in another building and comes back as a letter that says the decision stands.
They stand there waiting for me to fix it. Every one of them thinks the woman in front of them has some button she is choosing not to press.
Vlad
What if it's not about you but the bank?
Theodora
Maybe it is the bank they are angry at and I happen to be sitting there. It does not change how I feel. pressing her hands on her knees I wanted to be able to do something for them, and I cannot.
Vlad
pulling her into a hug I wish I could have done something for you to be able to help those people, but I cannot.
Theodora
letting herself be held and talking against his shoulder I know exactly why they come back angry. The loan is variable, so the payment changes. There are conditions attached that trigger if they miss two months.
And I am forbidden from summarising any of it. Summarising counts as advice, so what I do is read out the full contract under the right to know, forty minutes of it, and they sign at the end because they came in needing the money.
Vlad
Someone who offers loans like that is called "un cămătar", a usurer, a loan sharker, a cameter.
Theodora
On paper the bank is none of the sort, every rate we charge sits inside the legal ceiling. shaking her head I would call it the same thing you called it.
Vlad
What are the terms of the contracts, in short?
Theodora
There are four on offer and I can tell you here what I cannot tell them at the counter.
The house loan runs twenty-five years on a variable rate, a fee every time you pay early, and the bank can take all the money if you miss two payments.
The car loan is fixed and shorter, and the car stays the bank's until the last instalment clears. Miss one and they collect it.
The personal loan has no security behind it, so the rate is the highest of the four, and there is an insurance product attached that most people think is mandatory.
The overdraft is the worst of them. It charges by the day, it compounds, and there is a monthly fee on top for having the facility at all.
Vlad
I cannot accept the conditions.
Theodora
The bank tells them they are free to go elsewhere. They come to us because the other banks turn them down at the door, and the branch knows it, which is how the terms got to be what they are.
Vlad
Many times in financial education, because I had that, we have been told often to do the research and calculate based on interest equals credit times rate percent times months divided by twelve months for fixed credits and never take variable credits or credits at all.
Theodora
That advice works for people who have the option of walking away. The ones at my counter are poor and they need the money that week.
Vlad
What do you want to change?
Theodora
The overdraft first, because it takes the most from the people who have the least. And I would want the right to say one plain sentence about a contract before somebody signs it.
Vlad
Can you propose it?
Theodora
There is nowhere to propose it. Changes come out of a project office upstairs, they get tested somewhere controlled, and we are told the result.
Vlad
Can you go to the project office?
Theodora
The project office takes nothing from below. What gets built is whatever the shareholders want returned that year.
Vlad
looking at her face and wiping another tear from one of her eyes You are still thinking about it.
Theodora
closing her eyes while he does it I think about it every evening on the bus.
Vlad
Why didn't you tell me this earlier?
Theodora
I keep it down. That is what I am like, I hold it and I carry on.
Vlad
Eventually it has to come out.
Theodora
Your situation is worse than mine but there was nobody else I could have said any of this to.
Vlad
squeezing her once again after pulling her into another hug I don't know what to say.
Theodora
holding onto him You do not have to say anything.
Vlad
I like pulling you into hugs and squeezing.
Theodora
tightening her arms in return Keep doing it. I have gone years without being held.
Vlad
talking against her shoulder I want to hear more about you.
Theodora
keeping still There is not much more of me to hear. I would rather hear about you.
Vlad
rubbing her back I am not that interesting.
Theodora
You are the most interesting person I have met. leaning into the hand on her back Tell me something from before Titan.
Vlad
I will tell you something I can confirm is real, because the last five years are not, as part of the future alternative cloning technology. When I was twelve, I was a reader of the SCP Foundation. You know what that is?
Theodora
No. Tell me what it is.
Vlad
It is a project, a catalogue of anomalies with classifications. There are many anomalies written by the community, but the best ones are in the first cluster, between SCP-001, which is multiple anomalies, to the SCP-999 which is a living jelly that produces positive feelings.
Theodora
Which one was your favorite?
Vlad
I didn't have a favorite. There was Alexandria Eternal, which was a library under the city of Alexandria that stored an exact record of the life of every single person who lived on Earth and who were still alive. Each book was titled with the person's name, and it was possible to erase events, add events and modify events. Every modification would execute in the most immediate opportune time, which means that if I took a book of myself and wrote "He dies", I would immediately die unless someone else deleted the line, cancelling the action.
Theodora
So if I got into that library and found my own book, I could write that Vlad has papers and a flat on my street. turning toward him Does it work on things that are not deaths?
Vlad
It also works on things that are not deaths. You must write on the right book, that is, my book, if you want to be direct. If you write on your own book, you have to say that "Theodora granted Vlad papers and a flat on her street", and the system will automatically resolve the given references, as it knows that you met me, via the corpus. My book will also automatically update once the action is done.
Theodora
Then I would write it in my own book and let it resolve. almost smiling Putting it in yours feels like reaching into you without asking.
Vlad
The problem is that the books are very difficult to find because they are constantly generated based on the real worldwide birth rate, which is huge.
Theodora
So you would be standing in the shelves for a lifetime looking for one name. sitting back Whoever wrote that made sure the thing cannot be used.
Vlad
Not necessarily. To find your own book, you navigate to the newest generation and go back to find your birth date, and from the birth date, you pick your own name, and if your name is a duplicate, you can check each duplicate book for additional information, like location of birth. You cannot remove a book from the library and putting the book in the wrong spot will automatically cause the book to move to the correct spot where you took it from.
Theodora
So it is filed like a registry after all. thinking for a bit Every person on Earth has a birth record in there, and I am the only one of us two who has one out here.
Vlad
Yeah. And I also forgot to add that when you arrive at Alexandria Eternal, the book will say that you arrived at Alexandria Eternal, and when you write something into the book, the book itself will say that you wrote into it, because absolutely every single action you do in life is recorded.
Theodora
Then the moment I wrote your name in, that line would be in my book for anyone else to read, so nothing you do in there is quiet.
Vlad
I could take the book of Franz Fanon and extend his lifespan. The moment I pick Franz's book and cut that he died of leukemia and extend his life until the present day, the system would run a simulation generating a single set of plausible events that would lead to Fanon still being alive to this day. This operation will cause a reality shift as every single article written about Fanon, every single memory that people have about Fanon including his relatives would have to shift to accommodate to Fanon still living.
Theodora
I do not know who that is. What did he do?
Vlad
He was an anti-colonial thinker and psychiatrist who decided to write about the experiences of black people in french colonies, how white perceive black people, and how to fight against racism and colonialism.
Theodora
When was he alive?
Vlad
He was alive between the 1930s and 1960s.
Theodora
That is a long way back.
Vlad
Yeah, but as long as you don't do obvious harm that the watcher restricts, you can do virtually anything. For example, you cannot write to detonate a nuclear bomb, but you can arbitrarily write a random person to fall in love with you or even write billions to fall in love with you.
Theodora
That is worse than the bomb, a person being made to love you and the watcher counting it as harmless.
Vlad
And it will not be superficial love. Alexandria Eternal will try to retroactively alter time so that somehow billions of people will compete for your affection.
Theodora
And every one of them would swear it was their own feeling.
Vlad
Yeah, and only your book will mention that you wrote that. The system works based on a retrocasuality coherence principle, which means that past events always have to naturally lead to the present. By default, the book assumes that what you write in it has to happen now, even when I wrote in past tense. It always depends where I place the line of text, whether it's last or between existing lines.
Theodora
So where you put the line on the page is where it lands in time. Write at the bottom and it happens now, write it between two old lines and it has always been true.
Vlad
Yes, and the same concept applied when I was being cloned as a future alternative of the original. The original has never been to university, but according to my memories, I have been at university and learned IT in great detail, something the original never did. I prefer to tell you only what the original did, and I lied by saying their actions like they were mine.
Theodora
What do the invented memories feel like?
Vlad
They feel coherent, but also generic. The original memories had sparks in them. They were unique, specific. I seeked people when I was a teenager. It was something unusual, but not bad. I admitted to feeling attracted to other people and to feeling that my perspective on loneliness was not being considered. I haven't seen others have the courage to admit that indeed we are attracted to other people and loneliness exists.
Theodora
I have never admitted either of those out loud.
Vlad
I was a risk-taker and risk-avoider at the same time. I have gone through many difficult situations precisely because of my seeking behavior and simply not closing off. I had been automatically managing boundaries all the time. I never asked to be alone, I simply chose to be alone, and it was perhaps a few hours or only a day, because then I wanted to be energized again and have fun.
Theodora
I took whole weeks alone at that age. There were three girls I talked to and I never went looking for anyone beyond them.
Vlad
Do you still have contact with them?
Theodora
One of them. We message at birthdays and that is the extent of it now.
Vlad
For me it was extremely difficult to balance between having a life of shallow relationships and having a life of only deep relationships, so I kept both. I hoped I would have had two or three close friends so I can always talk what goes on my mind. I was always working on my website, and dreaming, and thinking. I wanted to share my ideas. But then, as a clone, I started to realize how ephemeral those goals are, and yet, I haven't given up on it completely.
Theodora
putting a hand on his arm I want to hear the ideas. I like the way you think about things.
Vlad
I know. looking up I think it's getting late.
Theodora
looking up with him It is. My bus goes soon and the gate gets locked.
Vlad
standing up I think it's time for you to go. I'll sleep at the embassy.
Theodora
getting up and taking her coat off the bench Come to the door with me first.
Vlad
walking toward the door to the building
Theodora
walking beside him to the service door and stopping there Tomorrow at four.
Vlad
I know.
Theodora
pulling him into a hug Go up and get some sleep.
Vlad
leaning into the brief hug and then letting go I will. Bye.
Theodora
stepping back and heading for the gate Bye, Vlad.
