The Suica at the gate§
A few days have passed since the first half of part 4. The 28 ends its inland run at the main station, and the concourse at this hour is wide and half lit, with the departure board turning over in long slow flips and the intercity gates standing open in a row at the far end. Vlad walks toward them. Akima has her wallet in her hand before she has thought about it, and taps a card against the reader out of fifteen years of habit. The gate holds, a soft double tone, and the panel fills with text.
Akima
pulling her hand back as though the reader were hot I am so sorry, I did not think. reading the panel It knows what the card is.
Vlad
Let me read it.

Akima
reading over his shoulder Yours is longer than mine.
At the machine§
Vlad
Latin languages are generally less efficient than symbolic languages but also easier to understand for the vast majority of people. I have a UBTC card, do you have one?
Akima
going through her wallet without much hope No. I have never taken an intercity train here.
Vlad
Then let's go at the ticket machine.
Akima
closing the wallet and following him toward the row of machines Is the card the better one to take, or the paper?
Vlad
Usually it's the card. With it you can travel virtually anywhere in Iosmein, Fluid and Aporia and never have to go to a terminal.
Akima
stopping in front of the machine Then the card. reading the panel on it before touching anything It asks for nothing except a language.
Vlad
The cards have their own UUID and are programmable.
The EEPROM§
Akima
scrolling the language list until JA appears, and pressing it It is here. the panel redraws in Japanese and she reads it out flatly for him as it comes

The English overlay§
Vlad
Put both of us, and by the way, can you slide to toggle the English overlay?
Akima
pressing 2 人, then finding the slider along the bottom edge of the panel and drawing it across with her thumb
pressing Leriduson Two people, six hours, and it has asked me for nothing else.
Vlad
Well, what JR East asks from you?
Akima
taking the card back as it comes out of the slot Money, mostly. Suica takes the fare at the gate, and for an intercity seat you buy the ticket and the express supplement and then reserve the seat on top of it.
Vlad
In Romania, CFR books the tickets before the train is ready and before the other single lines it will pass on are free, and then the latency can range between 60 and 120 minutes and even more.
Akima
A hundred and twenty minutes. slowly Nothing like that happened at home, and if it had, the line would have been rebuilt or abandoned inside a year.
White with the blue band§
Vlad
following her as she taps the cards Listen to the sounds. The automatic whistles mean the train should leave and the horns mean the train is leaving.
Akima
stepping through the gate and stopping on the platform side, looking down the line of trains That one. White with the blue band. At home that livery would be a western commuter train, and for a moment I read it as one. The waves along the side are wrong, and the panels catch the light differently, and nobody has washed it this week.
Vlad
looking at the signs of the train They are typical locally-designed trains designed to look modern. And by the way, this is our train.
Akima
reading the destination board on the flank and then boarding ahead of him Six hours. finding a pair of seats and taking the one by the window without being asked
No first class§
Vlad
sitting on the seat next to her by the aisle
Akima
leaning back on the seat and sinking in it Oh. running a hand along the armrest I expected a bench. looking down the carriage, then at the marking above the door Every wagon has the same letter and the same seats. There seems to be no first class anywhere on this train.
Vlad
There is no profit to make out of transport, so that is how it ended up.
Crying in front of a stranger§
Akima
turning toward him with her shoulder against the seat back Then can I ask you something about here, since you have answered everything else. Marliene cried in front of you within an hour. Is that ordinary, or is she unusual?
Vlad
It's unusual, but nonetheless I respect her. She is a sensitive person who has been in a pretty difficult situation because her partner left to work in Spain on wrong but good-intentioned belief. I wanted to be present for her in those difficult times and I ended up having fun with her. The problem is that I didn't commit to the promise of meeting more frequently.
Akima
taking that in At home a woman does not cry in front of a stranger on a train. She would apologise for weeks afterwards. And the leaving for work is the same story with us. You are supposed to have a permanent post and enough salary before anyone will consider you, and by the time you have it you are thirty five and too tired to look. Two from my section never married and never said why.
Collectivist without the collective§
Vlad
There was a Japanese youtube channel that tried to explain why all those things have been happening, and some trace to the economic growth while some trace to previous dinasties, or both, and then the same people being talked about in the comments section can disagree.
Akima
watching the yards move past the window People argue about it constantly, and none of them agree on which century it started in. What I think is that we were collectivist without the collective. Everyone gave everything to the group and the group gave nothing back that you could hold. Here it is collectivist too, and it feeds you.
Vlad
We had a small growth in Japanese migrants. I don't think many people would dare to leave the society they grew up in to start a new life.
Akima
nodding slowly There are not many of us. I know maybe thirty in Lindoma and we do not seek each other out much. Leaving is treated at home as a failure to endure, so the ones who go tend to be the ones who had already stopped being able to.
Gaman§
Vlad
Why is leaving treated as a failure to endure? Like, I think you shouldn't have to endure all this.
Akima
thinking about how to put it Because enduring is the virtue. Gaman. You are praised for what you can carry without complaining, so the person who puts it down has failed at the one thing everybody agreed was good.
The machines and the hours§
Vlad
With the massive advances in technology we have and the advances we made in developing better human values, I think there is no point to enduring anything when computers can do the work, or we can use smaller rotations.
Akima
the argument landing somewhere she has evidently been already We had the machines too. Every year the warehouse got better systems and every year my hours stayed the same. The work the machines took was simply replaced with more work.
Vlad
So, I was wrong.
Akima
shaking her head You were not wrong about the machines. The part you are missing is that somebody has to write down in advance how many hours a week a person works, and then defend it.
Born here§
Vlad
Do you ever wish you were rather born here than where you came from?
Akima
No. If I had been born here I would be somebody else entirely, and I would not know what this is worth.
Vlad
Do you ever feel homesick or have regrets for coming here?
Akima
the automatic whistles run down the platform, then the horn, and she does not turn her head Homesick, often. Regret, no. I miss the food and my mother's building and the sound of the crossing near her station, and none of that is an argument for going back.
Flinching at touch§
Vlad
Old habits came back in you, like you were spooked at touch, I felt like you are a bit aloof back when we were trying to get to know each other, you were trying to bow at me even though we corrected it to a handshake, and you used your Suica card instead of first getting to the machine.
Akima
hearing the whole list without flinching All of that is true and I did not notice any of it while it was happening.
Vlad
You are no longer aloof, now you seem really easy to talk to.
Akima
something easing in her face It has been one afternoon. If it holds until Leriduson I will believe it.
A strong woman§
Vlad
You are a really strong woman.
Akima
I do not know what to do with that. At home strong means you did not complain. I think you mean something else by it.
Vlad
I mean, regardless of the obstacles that appear on your way, like those of the norms in your home country, you never let yourself cease to them.
Akima
I did give in to them. What I did was stop, and then buy one ticket, and everything since has been the small business of unlearning the rest.
Vlad
But the fact that you were willing to go into a new, totally different place, that you were willing to unlearn those norms is still a sign of strength.
Akima
I have thought of it as running. But it was two years of paperwork and language and packing a flat, and I did it while working those hours. I would like to think it was strength and I stopped expecting anyone to tell me so.
Vlad
I genuinely believe you are strong person.
Akima
not looking away this time, and her eyes are bright Thank you.
Vlad
Sorry if I overwhelmed you with that compliment.
Akima
shaking her head quickly You did not. her voice going smaller Nobody has ever said that about me. Not my section, not my mother, and I had decided it was because it was untrue.
Vlad
It's not untrue.
Akima
her hands going still I know it is not, but every strong thing I did made me feel weaker, because it meant I had failed to manage what everyone else managed.
Vlad
Some people in life will be there for you regardless what other people think.
Akima
You have been there for one afternoon and it has already moved something. I do not know yet how to expect it to continue. I would like to find out.
The lagoon§
Vlad
We'll continue to talk and see how our friendship goes.
Akima
Then that is what I said yes to on the phone. looking out at the country beginning to open up past the yards I accepted the lagoon before I had thought about it, and I have not changed my mind.
Vlad
Good. I hope it will be fun.
Akima
the word taking a second to settle in her Fun. quietly, as though testing whether she is allowed it Yes. I would like it to be fun.
Vlad
Isn't it allowed? Because you hesitated
Akima
It is allowed. I have simply not had a plan for enjoying myself in a very long time.
Sarena§
Vlad
Last night I haven't slept well, I worked on some programs and then I thought about what Marliene, I and you could do together and then Sarena finally came back up.
Akima
turning toward him You were awake making plans for people. Who is Sarena?
Vlad
Sarena ia a neighbor I met on the tram. She is detailed and knowledgeable but after exchanging our handles, she didn't respond often.
Akima
So she went quiet on you. Do you think she meant something by it, or is she simply a person who does not write back?
The sleeper§
Vlad
trying to close his eyes I thought it was both, but right now I am so sleepy I would rather sleep in those six hours that stay up like this constantly.
Akima
lowering her voice at once Then sleep. shifting a little so the light from the window falls off his face Six hours is a very long time. I will wake you before Leriduson.
Vlad
Thanks for being considerate, but it would be better if we moved to the sleeper cabin because this is a modern train.
Akima
already gathering her bag There is a sleeper on an ordinary six hour train?
Vlad
standing up to grab his backpack and then walking through the carriages Of course, it should be at the back.
Akima
following him through the connecting doors, one hand on each seat back as the floor moves under her Nobody has checked the card once since the gate.
Vlad
reaching the sleeper car and settling the first room They told were there were no controllers. And there is bunk, so you can also sleep too.
Akima
stopping in the doorway and looking at the two bunks, the folded blankets, the small lamp This is a room. setting her bag down At home you would book this two months ahead and pay for it like a hotel.
Vlad
Ah, good this is not JR.
Akima
a small laugh No. sitting down on the lower bunk and taking her shoes off out of habit before she catches herself Sorry.
Vlad
It's okay, you can take off your shoes in this room.
Akima
setting them neatly side by side against the wall Good. quietly, looking at the upper bunk Take the lower one. You are the one who has not slept.
Vlad
settling into the lower bunk Ah... it's so comfy. I would give it four stars if the company were to be ratable.
Akima
climbing up and settling above him, her voice coming down from over the edge What is the fifth star waiting for?
Vlad
There are not many trains with such comfortable beds. They either feel like sleeping in a truck or they are not present at all.
Akima
the lamp clicking off above him Then it is four out of five against trains that mostly do not have beds. Sleep.
Vlad
closing his eyes and starting to sleep
The room settles into the running noise of the train, and after a while Akima leans over the edge of the upper bunk to check that he is asleep before lying back.
Akima
to nobody, very quietly Four hours until Leriduson.
