Mandrin-K, part two: the sixth day

Field record, session 0008. Southwestern Carpathians, roughly 40,000 years before present.

Translations to English are silent, recorded in the console.

The wall at first light#

The fire has stopped. Vlad is asleep on the gravel beside it. Nika is standing at the back wall with a burning stick held up in her left hand and the spear in her right. The painted panel runs along the rock about two metres up, past the four tally marks and the reference figures, and continues some three metres toward the fissure. The rows run left to right and top to bottom. Outside the cave mouth the sky is grey.

Delta meat culturer, model DC-40 field unit

OPERATING MANUAL, SECTION 4: SAMPLE HANDLING AND YIELD

4.1 Sample requirement

The DC-40 requires a fresh biopsy of skeletal muscle, 4 to 6 g, taken within 90 minutes of harvest. Sample port is on the upper left face of the unit (Fig. 4.1, item 3). Insert the sample cassette until the retaining clip seats. The green indicator confirms seating.

Fig. 4.1: front elevation of the unit, ports numbered 1 to 7, cassette shown half-inserted
4.2 Culture cycle

One loaded cassette runs a 15-day cycle. Yield per cycle at nominal power: 11 to 14 kg dressed weight, depending on donor species and sample quality.

Fig. 4.2: cutaway of the growth chamber, scaffold trays stacked in six tiers, nutrient line entering at the base
4.3 Cycle limit

The DC-40 does not perform immortalization. Cell lines derived from a single biopsy exhaust their replicative capacity within one cycle. The unit will not run a second cycle from a spent cassette; the amber indicator will lock out at end of cycle and the cassette must be discarded.

A new biopsy is therefore required every 15 days for continuous operation. Donor animal need not be the same individual, but must be the same species for a given cassette lot.

Fig. 4.3: flow diagram, donor to biopsy to cassette to 15-day cycle to yield, with the return arrow from cycle to biopsy
4.4 Nutrient

Nutrient concentrate, 2 L per cycle. Field substitution with rendered fat and hydrolysate is documented in Appendix C and reduces yield by approximately 30 percent.

4.5 Power

400 W continuous. Solar mat and battery pack supplied. At latitudes above 45 degrees in winter, expect cycle extension of 3 to 5 days.
