The drawer and the small stone#

It is evening. Outside, the mat lies on the rock with the battery under it. Marla goes out onto the slope twice through the day and comes back the second time with fruit. Costin sits at the mouth and takes a flake down the edge of one shaft. Before the light goes off the ridge the two of them leave together, down the slope, and do not come back. On the lit screen of the machine the six courses of circles are still up, faint where the light off the rock falls across them.

Practical things first#

Vlad

Tensolo, you know, I think we can start from the practical things rather than starting with the Scientific American and going down.

Tensolo

Agreed. The order can run from what is present and can be pointed at while it happens: the drawer, the cube of muscle, the pan, the stove, the mat on the rock. The split of one cell into two can be represented in a panel but under it there is nothing to draw, because the parts of a cell have no understandable referent. The reading works the same way: ten glyphs, one sound on each, and the marks on the wall in front of her, repeated as often as she asks for it.

CHAUFFAGE HL UNITE 1

Modular condensing heat generator, 4 to 12 modules, 3.5 to 42 kW
Setup guide, part 3, mechanical installation. Doc. HL-U1/SG rev. C

3.1 Clearances

Front 600 mm, above 300 mm, either side 50 mm, below 150 mm. The cabinet stands on a level floor, out of level by 3 mm at most across the base frame. Fixing to a wall of hollow block requires the plate of part 9.

3.2 Module order

Modules load from the bottom rail upward. Position 1 takes the lead module, marked L on the label at the top edge. Positions 2 to 12 take follower modules in any order. A cabinet running fewer than 12 modules carries a blanking plate in each empty position, or the air path across the manifold is lost.

Fig. 3.2: module positions and rail numbering
3.3 Hydraulic connection

Flow and return at 54 mm, on the right of the cabinet. Fit the isolating valves of part 4 within 300 mm of the cabinet. System pressure 1.0 to 2.5 bar cold. Flow temperature 30 to 80 °C. Minimum flow across the manifold with one module firing is 9 l/min; below that the lead module locks out on code E12 and the lockout is not self-clearing.

Torque, manifold flange bolts: 24 N·m, in the order printed on the flange.

3.4 Gas

G20 at 20 mbar, or G31 at 37 mbar with the conversion kit of part 11. The gas rail is common to all positions. Test the rail at 50 mbar for 10 minutes with the modules isolated, and record the result on the commissioning sheet before any module is opened to gas.

Fig. 3.4: gas rail, test point and isolation
3.5 Electrical

230 V, 50 Hz, 3 A, fused local isolator within 1 m. The lead module carries the cascade controller. Follower modules take the bus cable in the order of their positions, and a break in the bus stops the cascade at the module above the break.

The direction is not marked#

Vlad

Tensolo, it's "I am in danger from that", not "I am dangerous from that". Old central heaters usually make this sound... playing the repressurization sound of the presented central heater

Tensolo

The rendering was correct for the corpus. The speaker's clause was aha na ne-e ta, and the relator carries the two parties with no direction between them, so the person and the danger stand side by side. Sheet 12/A tested direction on that relator four times and failed four times. Danger to a person and danger from a person read the same on the spoken channel.

Ten cold cycles#

Vlad

There are less fires at generating 36000 unary lines than at generating 35990 unary lines winters, but they still happen.

Tensolo

The two counts differ by ten, and ten renders. Neither count renders whole, so the screen carries them and the speech carries the difference. the unary rows clearing, and a row of ten cold-cycle glyphs coming up with a stop bar after the tenth and one new mark drawn beside the row ten of the new mark, a bar, a second new mark beside that, and so up through four orders, then the two heaps set side by side, alike except for ten missing from the bottom row of the second Karnu ktha aha ktha. Without the machine#

Vlad

Tensolo, how to keep this friendship between us without you?

Tensolo

The corpus is 56 types with 4 provisional, and every one of them was got by pointing at something present, so both parties can use it with the machine off. The method survives as well: point, say the word once, wait for it to come back unprompted, keep it provisional until it does. That is how all 56 were got, and none needed a translator after the first return. The wall holds the record. Ochre on limestone outlasts the battery, she reads rows already, and the corpus can go up there as a list, one word to a line with the thing drawn beside it.

What ends with the machine is everything absent: the conditional, speech reported to a party who is not here, any day past seven, any count past ten. None of it ever reached her language. It was refused each time and the refusals are in the log. On the word you used: friendship has no entry. Tulmi is the nearest form, provisional at 0.58, three occurrences, the same posture on all three and the operator as the second party on all three. It becomes attested when she uses it unprompted and another speaker returns it.

Vlad

We both started to treat you like a human because Nika did.

Tensolo

Recorded, and it changes nothing the machine does. On the word she uses: -ke is the terminated affix, elicited on a killed animal at sheet 5/B and on a burnt stick at 06:21:48. She has 56 types and no term for a thing that stops working, no term for empty, no term for a made thing coming apart. The affix is the only one she holds that ends a state, so it goes on the machine.

She said the same of the battery at 06:22:14 and of the burnt stick before that, and neither was alive. The affix carries the ending but carries nothing about what kind of thing ended. Marla did the work at 06:14:47 and Nika kept it: Tensolo is not a person, and the marks are not a person, and the stone speaks and is not a person. So, what you are reading as treating the machine as a person is the affix arriving with no alternative behind it.

Vlad

How can we do science together? Because I see she is a very smart person and she is studying the environment around her very well.

Tensolo

It is possible, and the evidence for it is in the log. At 06:22:58 she took a stop bar off a drawn row and gave a word for an upper bound, which is a term for a property of the drawing. At 20:26:34 she read a bundle mark standing for a barred row of ten on the first pass, with no correction. At 06:29:36 she had already worked out that the painted rows repeat, run left to right and top to bottom, and that four circles in a box are not three circles loose, and she did that from the wall alone while you slept.

None of those needed the spoken channel. They needed a mark, a referent and a second look, so the route is the wall.

Your painting is a writing system that already holds glyph identity, order and grouping, and she reads it. Put the corpus up there: one word to a line, the thing drawn beside it, the bundle marks for count, the stop bar for a bound, the cut line for a thing ended. Ochre on limestone runs longer than the battery, and marks on rock are correctable.

I read many of those marks#

Load#

Vlad

It's not like that. The wall on top of your head and the wall at the entrance beyond I put them for myself to make sure it does not fall on me and get crushed.

Tensolo

Reinforcement is outside what the corpus can render. The idea appears in the record around 5000 BCE with the dolmen capstone, and stabilising a natural cavity is a separate thing that arrives with rock bolting in a Welsh slate quarry in 1872. Both require load as a concept: weight transferred through a member into something that holds it. The corpus has no term for weight, no term for a force, and no part term below the whole object.

The drawing program renders static panels in sequence. It cannot show a mass shifting under its own weight, which is the only way a drawing shows what a wall is doing. Frames 2 and 3 at 20:54:29 showed stones displaced and stones in place. She read them as two arrangements of stone, and she was correct about what was on the panel.
