The eighth debate§
It is Sunday, a little after four. The courtyard of Marginal 20B has the drying frames on their posts and the swings and climbing frame at the old end, where the demolished block stood. Katia comes in from the road with Emil, who goes straight for the frame, and she sits down on the bench along the wall where Vlad is already sitting.
Katia
So, how are you doing?
Vlad
I am doing just fine.
Katia
watching Emil get up onto the frame Did you hear the assembly went at GERM again on Friday?
Vlad
Yeah, now the proposition is "should Fluid adopt the modified, extended variant of David's reforms of the Romanian education system, in order to align Fluid with one of its closer linguistic relatives".
Katia
It went down again, the same as the other proposals this year. keeping an eye on Emil The extended one is MFD's, and it has tests at fixed ages for everybody, schools ranked on the results, families choosing a school off the ranking, and the teacher answerable for the number their class comes out with, on top of the bigger classes and the thinner subjects that were in the original. SD stood up to say the whole thing sits perfectly inside scientific socialism.
Vlad
In no way can this education reform respect the values of socialism in scientific form.
Katia
It does not. turning to face him I do not want Emil to be measured against his peers to keep a ranking moving. Fluid is not Romania and we can see very easily that this does not work anywhere it has been tried. They also want the emotional lessons on rejection taken out completely, so the older ones grow up being told that dropping a person with no reason given is fine.
Vlad
We need to keep fighting, say that GERM is not acceptable, vote for parties that oppose it like the governing left.
Katia
They should also put a limit on how many times the same thing can be brought back in a year, so the thing stays rejected until the next year.
The banlist§
Vlad
I agree with you, and I think the primary focus when dealing with those things is to win informational wars that have been lost in my country many times over. We need to combat mis- and disinformation at every level of the education system long before they reach this country.
Katia
The lessons are already there from the first years, how to check where a thing comes from and who is saying it. sitting back against the wall What worries me is the part they cannot teach around, which is people wanting the simple answer more than the true one.
Vlad
That's another problem we need to deal with. It's what restrictions are for. Debate is never equal, so there are speech rules to restrict or ban the transmission of information that is provably false and that when spread, could destabilize the Fluidian society.
Katia
The black ambulance is on the banlist, and it belongs there. looking straight at him People believed a video and went at an ambulance crew with axes over it. By then no correction reaches anyone, so the answer has to be ready before the claim goes, and once a claim is ruled false it should be stopped from spreading at all.
Vlad
We're both thinking like the youth on speech.
Katia
Which youth?
Vlad
The ones that say that it more important to protect people than allow unrestricted expression.
Katia
Then I am with them on that. watching Emil hang off the bar by his knees Emil, both hands.
The frame§
Vlad
looking at Emil Does he do that often?
Katia
Every time we come to one of these. He is fine, he has never fallen.
Vlad
We're lucky the designers haven't thought "let's pad all edges" and "lower all furniture".
Katia
There was a documentary about that, playgrounds built differently from the American ones. nodding at the frame Here they check what a fall would actually do, so a bar can sit at two metres if the ground under it is sand and bark. Their rule caps the height and pads everything underneath. The man in the film said children take the risk back through how they climb, and that the only playground with no accidents on it is an unused one.
The plane§
His phone goes on the bench between them, face up, and Katia looks at it and then back at the frame.
Vlad's phone, in the courtyard
-
We are on the plane and my mother is in the window seat. Everything at the counter went through. I will write to you when we land.
-
Ah, excellent, can't wait to see you
-
They are closing the doors now, so I have to stop. See you very soon.
-
See you
He puts the phone face down on the bench beside him, then looks at the frame where Emil is now sitting on the top bar.
Katia
Who was that?
Vlad
It was Nozaki, she boarded the plane. She will be arriving in two days.
Katia
Two days. straightening up on the bench Where are they sleeping when they land?
Vlad
On the train obviously. They will take the ferry and the trains.
Katia
I meant here, once they are in Lindoma. Has the housing cooperative given them anything yet?
Vlad
They will have to register once they get here.
Katia
Can you call the housing cooperative?
Vlad
grabbing his phone Yes, to ask if there are free units around me.
Katia
Not now. putting a hand over the phone on the bench Tomorrow morning.
The rota§
Vlad
lifting his hand and turning to her Alright. So, how have you been doing?
Katia
Tired. looking over at Emil I was up at five, and on Sunday it's a long day because the deliveries come in before we open.
Vlad
Aren't working times limited at six hours a day and the Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are weekends?
Katia
The limit is twenty-four hours over four days, and which four days is on the rota. shifting on the bench We open every day, so the four of us take turns. This month my turn is from Thursday to Sunday, and Sunday starts at the delivery, so it is early and it still ends at four.
Vlad
straightening up and then staying quiet I understand.
Katia
What are you going to do, then, when they arrive?
Vlad
I will show them around, the places, what it is like to be in here.
Katia
Bring them to the place one evening. I would like to meet her.
Vlad
I will, if I can.
Katia
Why would you not be able to?
Vlad
I didn't suggest that. It's just how I say when I am not sure.
Katia
Then say when you know. calling over Emil, come and drink something.
Emil§
Emil
coming over to the bench Mama, perque tu es mutat se lingua subito? (Mum, why did you change the language all of a sudden?)
Katia
handing him the bottle from her bag Me parla con un amic extern. (I am talking with a foreign friend.)
Emil
taking the bottle and drinking half of it Ubi es el de? (Where is he from?)
Katia
El es de Rumania. (He is from Romania.)
Vlad
Sali, Emil.
Emil
looking at Vlad and then back at his mother Sali. Como tu sapi el? (Hello. How do you know him?)
Vlad
Ia incontra el en se cafe dum. (I met her in the cafe building.)
Emil
Tu es se amic de Rumania? (Are you the friend from Romania?)
Vlad
Si, ia es. (Yes, I am.)
Emil
pointing at the frame Tu vole veni? Me pote sta suz se bar con se genu. (Do you want to come? I can hang off the bar by my knees.)
Vlad
standing up Si cert. (Yes, of course.)
Katia
staying on the bench Vai. Ia vos veglia de aqui. (Go on. I will watch you from here.)
The order is different§
Vlad
following him to the frame Dunque, tu ascende? (So, are you climbing?)
Emil
getting his foot onto the first bar Mie mama no dice dunque. El dice afinque. (My mum does not say dunque. She says afinque.)
Vlad
Dret. Ia no bun parla fluidian. (Right. I do not speak Fluidian well.)
Emil
Tu parla bin. pulling himself up a bar Se ordine es diferent. Ia no parla bun, ia no parla bin. (You speak well. The order is different. It is not ia no parla bun, it is ia no parla bin.)
Vlad
Tu sapi que es CEFR? (Do you know what the CEFR is?)
Emil
sitting up on the second bar No. Que es esto? (No. What is that?)
Vlad
El es un cesta metra nivel comprensiun de un lingua. (It is a scale that measures the level of understanding of a language.)
Emil
Ia fa angle ja. swinging a leg over Se profesor dice me lecti bin. (I do English already. The teacher says I read well.)
Vlad
Tu mai lecti angle bin vostre etate, ma tu mai no comprende multe en general. (You may read English well for your age, and you may still not understand much in general.)
Emil
stopping with one leg over the bar Me comprende tot que me lecti. (I understand everything I read.)
Vlad
Si, daca cada text tu lecti es A2. (Yes, if every text you read is A2.)
Emil
Que es A2? (What is A2?)
Vlad
A2, en CEFR, es se comensator etapa, ubi tu comprende solmente parv parte de se plen lingua. (A2, in the CEFR, is the beginner stage, where you understand only a small part of the whole language.)
Emil
dropping down onto the sand Ia vole se ultim etapa. Como me ariva aloc? (I want the last stage. How do I get there?)
Vlad
(You need to meet many expressions in that language. The highest level is C2, full proficiency, and I have never got there. I am B2 to C1 in English, which means I can understand almost any expression, with the exception of expressions that are only native or more specialised.)
Emil
sitting down on the sand with his back on the frame post Tu lecti que en angle? (What do you read in English?)
Vlad
Cada text supra se internet, salvo rumen publicatiuns. (Every text on the internet, apart from Romanian publications.)
Emil
E fluidian? Tu lecti fluidian supra se internet anque? (And Fluidian? Do you read Fluidian on the internet too?)
Vlad
No, e tu pote audi mie fluidian expresiun no es idiomatic. (No, and you can hear that my Fluidian wording is not idiomatic.)
Emil
Si, ma me comprende tu. getting up and brushing the sand off Se profesor dice que comprende es se prim cosa. (Yes, but I understand you. The teacher says understanding is the first thing.)
Vlad
Perque multe dialectus existe, e solmente un apare en academia. (Because many dialects exist, and only one appears in the academy.)
Emil
Mie mama parla se dialectu de aqui e se academia dice altre cosa. looking back at the bench Se profesor corige me quando ia scribe, ma no quando ia parla. (My mum speaks the dialect from here and the academy says something else. The teacher corrects me when I write, and not when I speak.)
The compulsory language§
Vlad
Quand parle le français, je... respecte beaucoup regles... (When I speak French, I... respect many rules...) pulling out his phone and writing what he was trying to say No, et no como dice que quando ia parla france, ia necesita respecta multe regulas. (No, and this is not how you say that when I speak French, I have to respect many rules.)
Emil
coming closer to look at the phone Que lingua es esto? (What language is that?)
Vlad
El es france lingua. (It is the French language.)
Emil
Sona como fluidian ma no es. taking a step back Ubi persones parla esto? (It sounds like Fluidian and it is not. Where do people speak that?)
Vlad
El no sona como fluidian, e els parla que lingua en Frantia e el es devet en scola en mie stat. (It does not sound like Fluidian, and they speak that language in France, and it was compulsory at school in my state.)
Emil
E tu es aprendet el bin? scuffing the sand with his shoe Se france place te tu? (And did you learn it well? Do you like French?)
Vlad
No, e ia no aprecia el. (No, and I do not like it.)
Emil
Perque tu aprende el, afinque? (Then why do you learn it?)
Vlad
Ia no aprende ancora. Ia es necesitat aprende te scola. (I do not learn it now. I was required to learn it at school.)
Emil
going back to the frame and putting both hands on the bar Aqui no es un lingua obligatori. Se profesor dice que nos elige. (Here there is no compulsory language. The teacher says we choose.)
Vlad
Ia spera el es praxit en mie scola, se nule obligatori parte. (I hope that was put into practice at my school, the part with no compulsory language.)
Emil
hooking his knees over the bar and letting himself hang back Tu es ancora en scola? (Are you still at school?)
Vlad
Obviment no. (Obviously not.)
Emil
hanging upside down and looking at him Ah, es praxit. Ia no es vidit que es se pasat. (Ah, es praxit. I did not see that it was the past.)
The boat yard§
Vlad
Que tu sonia de? (What do you dream of?)
Emil
swinging gently upside down Ia vole praca te se dvor de navs, como se homins que veni manja. (I want to work at the boat yard, like the men who come in to eat.)
Vlad
Se sonia va presto muta quando tu va cresce. (The dream will change soon when you grow up.)
Emil
pulling himself up and sitting on the bar Se profesor dice se mesme cosa. Ma ia vole el nunc. (The teacher says the same thing. But I want it now.)
Vlad
Tu va no ave nunc. (You will not have it now.)
Emil
Ia sapi. looking over at the bench Ia demanda mama e el dice se mesme. (I know. I ask mum and she says the same.)
Vlad
Quando ia parla en fluidian, dura multe pensa. (When I speak in Fluidian, it takes a lot of thinking.)
Emil
jumping down off the bar Ia atenda. Nos vai te mama, el ave se aqua. (I will wait. Let us go to mum, she has the water.)
Vlad
Tu es sed, afinque? (So you are thirsty?)
Emil
Si. walking ahead of him toward the bench Ia beve tot e ia vole plus. (Yes. I drank it all and I want more.)
Vlad
following him Tu pote beve aqua de se tasnitores. (You can drink water from the fountains.)
Emil
stopping at the edge of the sand Se tasnitor de aqui es rompet depos se demolitiun. Se voda es plus bun te mama. (The fountain here has been broken since the demolition. The water is better at mum's.)
Vlad
Ia pensu tu ver es bevet tot. (I think you really did drink it all.)
Emil
shrugging and going on toward the bench Mama sempre ave un altre botilia en se sac. (Mum always has another bottle in her bag.)
Katia
holding the bag open so he can see into it Ia no ave un altre botilia et vice. Nos beve te se hiza. (I do not have another bottle this time. We will drink at home.)
What she says about him§
Vlad
sitting on the bench and looking at Katia I too did not bring a bottle. I can bring water from inside the building.
Katia
Do not go up four floors for a can of water. closing the bag We are going in ten minutes anyway, and he can drink at home.
Vlad
He seems really patient.
Katia
With people he likes. watching Emil climb back onto the frame At home he asks for the same thing nine times.
Vlad
Like what?
Katia
The boat yard, mostly. He wants to go down and see it, and I keep telling him it is a working yard and not open to anyone who walks in.
Vlad
The school could organize a field trip.
Katia
They do that in the fourth year. leaning forward with her arms on her knees He has three years to wait, and he knows that, which is why he asks me.
Vlad
I am not sure what you can do about that besides waiting three years.
Katia
I can ask the men at the counter when the yard shift comes in.
Vlad
You could, try that.
Katia
watching him get to the top bar I will ask on Thursday.
Vlad
What do you think about him?
Katia
He is easy to be around and hard to get to bed. keeping her eyes on the frame I worry that he is on his own too much.
Vlad
Like how much time does he spend alone?
Katia
The four days I work, from the end of school to five, he is at my mother's. thinking about it He mostly reads or draws there and then we come home and it is the two of us.
Vlad
Do you have any homework?
Katia
Very little, and there is a plan to take it out completely in the first years. looking over at him He reads on his own anyway, and the school put him at A2 in English, which is well past where the others sit.
Vlad
And Fluidian?
Katia
N-B1 going on N-B2, which is the native scale. moving the bag onto her lap He follows nearly everything said to him and he has picked up three or four dialects out of the books, and what he speaks is the standard.
Dialects§
Vlad
What dialects he picked up?
Katia
The eastern seaboard, out of an adventure series set at Ravelluri. For a month he was saying facit and porte at the table. There is western wording in him too, from a book my mother gave him.
Vlad
What is the western wording like?
Katia
The preposition goes after the noun, so a south-westerner says "se dum suz" where we say "suz se dum", and the hour takes an ending, "quatrecor" for at four. Their house words are different as well, "kapu" for the gate, "astal" for the table, "soba" for the room. The teacher told me none of it counts as a mistake, and that the register prints alternate forms with a note saying that they are understood everywhere and not corrected.
Vlad
And on some streets and parks I have gone to while exploring the city a year ago, the plaques were saying "severni" rather than "nord" and I learned that there is no correct way to speak Fluidian.
Katia
Severni is the older word and it stayed in speech after the plaques changed. pointing up the road The new plates on the junction say nord, and people around here still says severni when they give directions.
Vlad
And why doesn't it figure in the academy?
Katia
The academy prints one part of it. More than half of Fluidian is the spoken language, what the researchers call vulgaris, and it was spoken for a long time before anybody wrote it down. turning toward him There are several dictionaries besides, each one pegged to another language, and the one most people have at home is the Romanian-pegged one.
Vlad
It doesn't sound like Romanian, so how is it pegged to Romanian and why Romanian is so common in Fluidian?
Katia
Pegged means the entries are explained through Romanian and the letters are given the Romanian values, and the reading of written Fluidian came out of that in the first place. watching Emil draw on the sand The words came off the trade and craft families of the southern towns, and Lindoma is one of the two places they settled, so their dictionary is the one that spread.
Vlad
But how exactly were the trade and craft families Romanian?
Katia
They came in by sea and up through the southern frontier while it was still open, and they took work in the port towns and were shipwrights, tinsmiths, people who mended things. Lindoma and Sornorum were where they stayed. They spoke Fluidian outside but kept Romanian at home, and some families here still do. That is the version I got at school, so do not take it as exact.
Vlad
What type of Fluidian I have been using?
Katia
The standard. The dictionaries sit close to each other anyway, only the sounds, rules and everyday words change a little, and the rest is the same language.
Vlad
What is your favorite dialect of Fluidian?
Katia
The south-eastern one, close to Aporia. They speak slowly and every word comes out whole, so I follow them without asking twice. shifting on the bench They keep one ending where we keep two, and they have a tense we do not, the futur proce, for a thing on the point of happening, se tren es per ariva, the train is about to come in.
Vlad
Why most examples are about the train?
Katia
The written language settled in the years the lines were being built, so the wording got shaped for use on transport. turning her head toward the road A train is a thing that moves and arrives and gets delayed, which covers most of what a tense has to do, and the examples in every book come out of that.
Five minutes§
Vlad
Right.
Katia
calling over to the frame Emil, cinc minutes e nos vai. (Emil, five minutes and we go.)
Emil
Dece? Solmente dece minutes. (Ten? Only ten minutes.)
Katia
No. Cinc, e tunc nos vai te hiza. (No. Five, and then we go home.)
Emil
Perque? (Why?)
Katia
Perque ia es fatigat. Ia leva te hora cinc et matin. (Because I am tired. I got up at five this morning.)
Emil
coming a few steps closer to the bench Ma perque tu invita el si tu es fatigat? (But why did you invite him if you are tired?)
Katia
Perque ia vole vidi el. putting the bag down beside her El no es venit te se cafe de tri anos, e persones como el es rar. (Because I wanted to see him. He has not come to the cafe in three years, and people like him are rare.)
Emil
sitting down on the sand in front of the bench El es bin. Ia place el. (He is nice. I like him.)
Katia
Si. straightening his collar where it has turned in El ave cosas complex de explica que tu no comprende ancora, ma ia comprende els. (Yes. He has complicated things to explain that you do not understand yet, and I do understand them.)
Emil
looking up at her Tu ave un afectiun per el? (Are you fond of him?)
Katia
taking a moment before she answers Tu pone sempre questiuns complex. Ubi tu es aprendet pone els? (You always ask complex questions. Where did you learn to ask them?)
Emil
staying still on the sand Esto es un deviatiun. Tu no es respondet. (That is a deflection. You did not answer.)
Katia
Bin. Ia ave un afectiun per el como un amic ver bun, e no plus quam esto. (All right. I am fond of him as a very good friend, and no more than that.)
Emil
Ia no judica te. drawing a line in the sand with his finger Ia observa solmente que tu focusa supra el tot se temp. (I am not judging you. I only notice that you focus on him the whole time.)
Katia
Ia ave cosas important de discute con el hodie. touching the top of his head E tu es inteligent, tu observa tot. (I had more important things to discuss with him today. And you are clever, you notice everything.)
Emil
leaning back against her knees Ia vole que tu passa temp con me anque. (I want you to spend time with me too.)
Katia
Ia praca ses hores en un die, e tunc ia veni te se hiza per tu. pulling him up onto the bench and holding him against her Ia sapi, e ia va fa plus. (I work six hours in a day, and then I come home for you. I know, and I will do more.)
Emil
with his head against her shoulder Tu pote prende un pausa de praca? Tu es mude de vidi tant persones. (Can you take some time off work? You are worn out from seeing so many people.)
Katia
Ia es considerat esto ja. keeping her arm round him Ia demanda un saptimana en se rota de octobre. (I have been considering that. I will ask for a week in the October rota.)
Emil
Octobre es distant. (October is far away.)
Katia
Ia sapi. resting her chin on the top of his head Es se prim que ia pote. (I know. It is the first one I can take.)
The name§
Emil
turning to look at him Que es vostre nome? (What is your name?)
Vlad
El es tu, e mie nome es Vlad. (It is tu, and my name is Vlad.)
Emil
Vlad. saying it once more to himself Mie nome es Emil. (My name is Emil.)
Vlad
Ia sapi. (I know.)
Emil
Mama es dicet te vos? (Did mum tell you?)
Vlad
Si, en se cafe. (Yes, in the cafe.)
Emil
sliding down off the bench Nos vai nunc, mama? (Are we going now, mum?)
Katia
Si, nos vai. standing up and taking the bag off the bench Dice adio te Vlad. (Yes, we are going. Say goodbye to Vlad.)
Emil
putting his hand up Adio, Vlad.
Katia
lifting the bag onto her shoulder I hope you come to the place again, and not in three years.
Vlad
I will come sooner, when I have the time.
Katia
Bring them when they arrive. taking Emil's hand Adio, Vlad.
Vlad
Adio, Katia.
