Lindoma

Lindoma is a town of 1,140,000 residents in the sub-region of Lindoma, in the Western Region of the Republic of Fluid. The largest city of the Republic, its northern port, and the seat of the Assembly, the courts and the oversight offices. Roughly one resident in sixteen lives here.

Setting

Lindoma is built around a drowned valley on the northern coast, where the estuary opens into the sea, with the old town on the western headland and the yards along the water. The climate is maritime, with a January mean of 4.2 °C and 780 to 1,050 mm of rain a year. The motorway to Sornorum and Lutoliluri begins here, and the rail line to the southern port was completed in 1907.

History

The reading circle banned by the Crown in 1799 met in the port. Shipyard workers took the city for nineteen days in the March Rising of 1848 and it was retaken with mercenaries hired from Bor Brashavenko. In November 1890 the garrison here refused an order to fire, which is taken as the end of the monarchy.

The yards struck eleven days after the deaths at Lutoliluri in 1971, and the strike wave followed. The Democratic Socialist Bloc was founded at Lindoma in 1994. In 2023 nine hundred residents drawn by lot convened here without any legal authority to do so, sat for five weeks, and demanded a new constitution.

Work and provision

Shipbuilding and repair, the container and passenger quays, the national rail workshops, three universities, and the greater part of the administrative work of the Republic. The tool and instrument libraries here are the largest in the country.

Government

Governed by an elected communal council under Article 141(2), with neighbourhood assemblies under Article 172 in each of its twenty-eight neighbourhoods. The Assembly of the Republic sits here, as do the National Court, the Constitutional Court and the five oversight offices.
