Tavrino

Tavrino is a town of 118,000 residents in the sub-region of Marnaqui, in the Eastern Region of the Republic of Fluid. It stands on the Marnaqui, the longest river in the Republic, and it contains the chemical and pharmaceutical factories of the eastern region. The reach below the works has been under remediation since 1977.

Setting

Tavrino stands where the Marnaqui crosses the central plains, the river running through the town from the west. The Marnaqui is the longest river of the Republic, rising on the eastern side of the divide at Ilvara and ending in the Ravelluri lagoon at Marendo. The chemical works are on the river below the town. The sub-region is in the continental interior, with a July mean of 23.8 °C and 480 to 690 mm of rain a year.

History

The chemical works were expanded under the Directorate, and the reach below them was biologically dead by 1966. The Cortius Report of 1968 recorded the finding and was suppressed on completion. Remediation began in 1977, and the first fish were recorded in the reach in 1994. Contaminated sites are inventoried, published and remediated on a binding timetable under Article 34(4), and the Marnaqui entry is the oldest on the national list.
