Torvena

Torvena is a town of 96,000 residents in the sub-region of Kelvaqui, in the Western Region of the Republic of Fluid. The market town of the northern plains, on the edge of the high moor. It produces wool, building stone and uranium. The coal pits were closed under the binding schedule for phasing out the combustion of fossil fuels, fixed under Article 32(2).

Setting

Torvena is at the lowest point of the Kelvaqui moor, where the upland streams gather. The moor is lower and wetter than the Vandorum upland and is covered in blanket peat. Rainfall exceeds 1,200 millimetres a year, the highest in the Republic.

History

A drovers' town before the Republic. The pits opened in the 1860s on seams that were thin and poor even by the standards of the time, were largely mined out by the 1930s, and were closed for good under the binding schedule for phasing out the combustion of fossil fuels fixed under Article 32(2). Uranium was found under the moor in 1956 and is still mined there. Torvena has voted for the Highlands Federation at every election since the Federation was founded.

Work and provision

Uranium mining on the moor, wool and cloth cooperatives, the quarry, upland restoration work, and the sheep and hardy cattle of the moor edge.

Government

Elected communal council under Article 141(2). Most of the communes around it are small enough to be governed by assembly in person under Article 141(1).
