Sornorum

Sornorum is a town of 262,000 residents in the sub-region of Sornorum, in the Eastern Region of the Republic of Fluid. Where the north-south motorway meets the southern route to the port. The most connected town in the Republic, and the town worst affected by the flood of 2017.

Setting

Sornorum is built on the floodplain where three watercourses meet, a site that suits the road network and is exposed to flooding. Rainfall in the south has become more intense without becoming more plentiful, which is the pattern that produced the floods of 2017.

History

The junction determined the growth of the town. In 2017 the river displaced four thousand people from their homes, from a floodplain on which the spatial plans then in force permitted building. Article 184 now makes spatial plans subject to public inquiry and to habitat connectivity as a condition of validity, and Article 75(4) gives those displaced by ecological harm a right to housing, provision and the restoration of their livelihood.

Work and provision

Freight and distribution, vehicle and rail maintenance, food processing, and the southern flood works. The rebuilt neighbourhoods are on higher ground and the floodplain has been returned to washland.

Government

Elected communal council under Article 141(2).
