Meeting

Rooms open from a browser, a handset or a telephone. Small calls are routed directly between the people in them, and larger ones are mixed at the nearest available exchange.

How a room is createdDirect below four

Direct routing below four participants

A room of two or three participants is treated as an ordinary call. Below four participants the room hands the call to WebRTC and the ends route between themselves, exactly as an ordinary call is carried. No mixer is involved and no server sees the media.

At four and above a mixer becomes cheaper than the mesh, and the room selects one: the local exchange first, then the sub-region, and only then a more distant site. A meeting whose participants are all in one sub-region never leaves it.

Demand on the lineDown to one voiceband pair

Bandwidth

What a room asks of the line
Participants How it is carried Per participant Works on
2 Direct, WebRTC 120 kbit/s audio only Any line including one voiceband pair
3 Direct, mesh 240 kbit/s Two bonded pairs or better
4 to 12 Mixer at the local exchange 300 kbit/s Three bonded pairs, ISDN, anything faster
13 to 60 Mixer, sub-regional 500 kbit/s DSL, fibre, LTE
Above 60 Mixer, with audio-only fallback offered 64 kbit/s audio Any line at all

Every room offers an audio-only join, and the assemblies use it routinely so that a household on a mountain pair can take part in a meeting of four hundred.

In practiceAssemblies and minutes

Assemblies meet here

Communal and sub-regional assemblies sit in rooms on meet.telephony.rof, with the dial-in number printed on the notice. Attendance by telephone counts the same as attendance in the hall.

Rooms opened for an assembly are announced in #assembly- channels and the room number appears in the Public Register alongside the papers.

Rooms are not kept

A room exists while somebody is in it. When the last participant leaves, the room and its number are gone, and the number returns to the pool after a day.

Nothing is recorded by the service. If an assembly wants a record, somebody in the room makes one and publishes it under their own name.
