What Fluidian is
A contact language with Latin roots and a borrowed vocabulary, settled into its present shape over about a century and a half, and now used by nearly everybody in the Republic without ever having been made official.
Where it came from
The peninsula was a route between other places long before it was a state. Latin arrived with the coastal administration and supplied the structure of the language: the prepositions, the participles, the action nouns in -tiun, and the position of the adjective after its noun. The vocabulary laid on that structure arrived later and from several directions. The machine factories and the tram sheds supplied Czech words, first in the depots and afterwards in ordinary speech. The trade and craft families of the southern towns supplied Romanian, and the reading of the written language follows from that. The eastern seaboard supplied Italian, the southern frontier Serbian and the plain Hungarian.
The result is a patchwork in the vocabulary and a single consistent system in the grammar. The academy came afterward. It was constituted in 1946 to write down what had already happened, and its first published work was the register of irregular derivations, because those were the forms newcomers got wrong.
Who uses it
The Republic has 18,402,000 residents and no official language. Article 16(1) gives every person the right to address public authority in a language they understand, with interpretation provided free of charge, and leaves the languages of official record to organic law. Fluidian is not among them by right; it is there by use.
The figures below count speakers and not residents, so they add to more than the population. Most people in the border communes and the port speak two or three languages.
