Where the fleet is based

Fifteen main depots and 94 small depots hold 18,592 vehicles. Every inspection interval, every rebuild and every drawing behind them is published, and any workshop with the drawings may do the work.

The cycle

Examination Interval Off the road for Done by
Daily check Every night in service 25 minutes Depot mechanics
Check A 10,000 km, or 30 days 4 hours Depot mechanics
Check B 60,000 km 2 days Depot building workshop
Yearly check 12 months 5 days Depot building workshop
Half-life rebuild Half the design life 9 to 16 weeks The factory that built it
Ferry inspection 12 months, dry dock every 30 3 weeks Lutoliluri or Maravel
Pod check 4,000 km, or 14 days 90 minutes Lindoma Lanes

A half-life rebuild returns a vehicle to the accounts as a rebuild, with its own build account, and the vehicle keeps its model code.

The older fleet

  • Trams, at Ferrista

The CKD T3, KT8D5 and T6A5 are supported entirely from Ferrista, which holds the drawings under the transfer of 1993. Wheel unit frames, controller parts and pressed body panels are made on site. The builder has supplied nothing since 1994.

  • Trolleybuses, at Tavrino and Ilvara

The ZIU B9 runs on a Calmena drive fitted between 2006 and 2012. Ilvara presses the body panels from the original moulds, which came with the last delivery and were kept.

  • Carriages, at Sederna

The VAG R1 was fitted with new wheel units to the Sederna standard in 2003, which is why it shares brake parts with the rest of the railway fleet.

  • The one that is running on borrowed time

The KRN C2 coach lost parts support in 2011. Seventy-five remain in service in Ombraqui, kept going by exchange between depots and by parts made one at a time. When a frame goes, that vehicle stops for good.

Open by default

The drawings are public. Knowledge made with public resources belongs to everyone, and patents are prohibited, so every drawing behind every vehicle in the register is free to read, copy and use. Depot manuals, wiring diagrams, torque figures and fault trees are published in the same place as the catalogue.

Anyone may do the work. A commune workshop, a tool library or a person with the drawings and the skill may repair a vehicle. The federation asks only that a safety-critical repair is recorded against the vehicle, since the record is what the next mechanic reads.

Parts stay available for at least ten years. That is the minimum the Republic sets for any device supplied as provision, and the federation holds to it for vehicles as well. In practice the factories keep parts for the whole design life, which for a tram is thirty-five years and for a carriage is forty.
